GIA Assembly: Dragon Boat Festival
Grade 5 class 1 and class 2 students have been very busy this past month.
They have been preparing for their Dragon Boat Festival assembly. Grade 5 GIA students wanted to teach students about Dragon Boat Festival. Why do we celebrate this special festival? And stories behind the festival.
We have integrated drama and stories about QuYuan into our plays. Students learned how to write scripts with their groups, how to compromise on disagreements, and they have also learned drama techniques and how to speak with confidence in front of the crowd.
Our mission was to make up possible stories on QuYuan’s death, so teaching students how to be creative and think outside of the box was very important. Students had the opportunity to show off their creativity and their talents. We talked about stories that we could combine into our plays and how can we incorporate modern elements, such as taking pictures with a cellphone.
After the play, GIA teachers prepared quizzes for students. It was a great chance for students to practice speaking English. In order to win a prize from the teacher, students must answer in complete sentences.
To make this assembly memorable, there were 3 games related to Dragon Boat Festival. Dragon boat races, dragon boat spelling relay and throwing rice dumpling game. Students had lots of fun competing and learned something new about the Dragon Boat Festival.
